One of things I loved most in St. John's, Newfoundland, were all the "Jelly Bean Houses". Parts of the city have very steep roads lined with brightly painted houses. They are old buildings and folklore surmises that the houses were painted in bold colours so that returning sailors could see them through the fog. In the 1970s there was a revitalization program in downtown St. John's and part of that plan was expanding the number of colourful houses. Whatever the reason for the multicoloured houses, it leaves a lasting impression and contributes the warm character of the city.
