A visit to St. John's, Newfoundland would not be complete without a walk around Signal Hill and the Cabot Tower. The view from up there is incredible not only of the city but also the Atlantic Ocean. Before ship to shore radio, flag signals were used to tell those in the town below which ships were arriving. Signal Hill was the site of St. John’s harbour defences from the 17th century to the Second World War. Today the huge canons still keep sentry and the red sand stone tower withstands the harsh winds. When I was up there the cold gusts of Atlantic air chilled me to the bone. I would advise wearing layered clothing and gloves unless it is extremely sunny and warm when you visit. It's well worth the time.
